Do I need a Domain or Website Hosting?
Question:
Hello,
I have built and XHTML page with some CSS attached to it. I would like to have it on the internet. I would also like to attach a www.website.com/forums directory to it where I could have some phpBB forums or something like that.
I went to GoDaddy to try and purchase a domain, which is what I thought I needed. Going through the process I noticed an option for "Website and Hosting" for about a month. Do I need to get this, or is it just some kind of "Website Builder" for people who want templates and that kind of stuff?
I have an FTP program and I’m familiar with uploading things to an already-created site, but I’ve never really gone through the set-up. Also, I don’t want to spend like /year unless I have to.
Please go easy on me, I’m not a web developer :3 I’m a lowly graphic designer.
Thank you. :)!

k. I know how you feel, I felt the same way when I started doing GoDaddy. So, first, GoDaddy gives you free web hosting. HOWEVER, they give it to you with ads at the top, which slow down the website considerably and are SUPER ANNOYING. This doesn’t work for a business.
The hosting is NOT a website builder for people who don’t know how to make websites. Hosting is like some space on a computer that’s online. It’s a computer that is online all the time and is available to anyone. You really need this. But, godaddy gives it to you for free with ads.
To set up the free one, go to Products and go to Free Products. Click on Free Web Hosting, and click Set Up. Allot 4 hours to do this, since Godaddy is really hard to navigate and I forgot how to set it up. Good Luck
In case you want to see how the ads look, go to
http://www.kooia.info
The ads behind the logo. I didn’t know that there’s ads, too, so I was very suprised that I had to pay $60 and haven’t gotten around to it. But I know a friend who’s gotten the hosting and isn’t too happy, but because they don’t know how it’s like having ads. They don’t see anything special – but it’s better than http://www.sbi.com, which charges $300 per year!
Domain name is just the "dot com" or whatever name you choose
The hosting is the part you pay to have a company keep your site on the Internet (disk space, power, bandwidth, etc.) You can probably use shared hosting and get away with ~$2/month or less, but not with GoDaddy. Get the domain with godaddy but look around for hosting
www.webhostingtalk.com is a great place for reviews
Hi!
You do not necessarily need the hosting option from GoDaddy, but if you choose to go without it, you will need to find somewhere else to host it.
A domain name is only the address pointing your website, it does not include space to put the site. This is what hosting is for.
Anybody can host a website at their own house for free, but you’ll need the right equipment and many people do not have a sufficient upload speed to do so. If it sounds like a good idea, look into this because it is going to cost you less, but you’ll still have to pay for a domain name if you want it to look professional.
So, using "Website and Hosting" is the easiest and probably best way to go, but be aware there are other options if you wish to look into them.
It does not cost that much , you can check web host like ixwebhosting.mobi or else you can check review of top ten web hosts at website like aplis.net ,etc .
I suggest you this website http://www.tenhostingreviews.com where you can find a list of the Top 10 Web hosting companies with the best features, support and pricing. You can get everything you need and it’s very easy. For what you are asking, I recommend you the option 1, Hope this could help you.
Godaddy is a good place to register your domain name, but some people have soma problems with their web hosting services.
As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your forum website: 1- Buy a domain name. To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.
If you’re going to create a forum site at your own domain without any forced ads, you need a web host providing forum tools (phpbb or vbulletin).
Take a look at:
http://www.threehosts.com/forum
There you can reach the three reputable companies that are leaders in the forum website hosting industry.
And a useful, informative article regarding your question:

Hope this helps.
You need both a domain name (like something.com) and hosting (a place on the server where your XHTML and CSS files, along with images and other stuff will be located).
You then upload your files with an FTP client to your hosting account.
For hosting I recommend one of these: http://www.tophostingpicks.com
iPage has the best offer right now.
Their standard price is $84/year ($6.95) but they have
a 50% sale, one year of hosting for $42.00.
Their plan includes:
Unlimited disk space
Unlimited bandwidth
Free domain name
Price: $42/year ($3.50)
They have one of the most popular hosting platforms, which currently hosts over a million websites. They’re also one of the oldest hosting companies, founded in 1998.
They also have a great custom control panel with OneClick installs of all the popular software like phpBB forums (so you don’t have to download them, then upload them to your hosting account and install them manually) WordPress, Joomla, Forums, Chat, Galleries, Online stores and a lot more.
Heh you need both !!
